Brief course description
Death - as one put it - is a matter of those who are still alive. For sure it can not be put down to the physical act of dying. The way people talk about it, the way they handle it is a matter of culture and so is liable to change. The way people treat death and the dead alone speaks volumes about a culture. The seminar seeks to introduce students with diverse attitudes towards death and its' different images and symbolic representations in culture. During the course both classic and contemporary texts as well as some selected filmic testimonies of attitudes towards death (both documentaries and feature films) will be discussed. The discussed texts will include those presenting the entanglement of anthropologist's experience in the possibility of gaining an understanding of certain attitudes towards death as well as the difficulty concerning objective speaking about it.
