Brief course description
It has been some time since the issue of representation in anthropology has become a real predicament. This concern results in a declining belief in the existence of objective social artifacts (which are constructs) as well as the collapse of anthropologist's authority. These opinions are accompanied by a growing awareness of literary and rhetoric dimensions of ethnographies (literary turn). Strong stress is also laid on the fact that reflection is an indispensable part of anthropologists' research and in consequence fieldwork is once again at issue. This course seeks to bring up some of the central concerns of reflexive anthropology and will involve discussion about selected readings of contemporary anthropologists who are major proponents of changes in the discipline and advocates for a new approach (e.g. James Clifford, Clifford Geertz, Kirsten Hastrup, George Marcus, Paul Rabinow) but also those who are rather skeptic about it.
